Sligo handball in mourning - Michael Porter R.I.P.

Sligo Handball in mourning

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ballymote handball player Michael Porter following an illness. Michael Porter came to prominence early in his handball career when winning the Minor Doubles All-Ireland doubles with clubmate Francis McCann back in 1977. The duo won Minor & Hardball doubles titles together as well as Junior Softball doubles in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

He took a lengthy break in the mid 1980’s but returned to win the Masters B Irish Nationals title in 2001 and followed this up the following year winning the Masters A singles. Michael played his part in the success of the Irish 1-Wall Nationals which Sligo hosted from 1999-2008 and officiated at many of the finals.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, Son, Jonathan and daughters Catherine and Sarah, both his parents and a sister. He will be sadly missed by his family, handball friends far and wide and his work colleagues at Eircom in Rathedmond in Sligo. Funeral detail will be available on oceanfm.ie later this evening.

As a mark of respect Sligo Handball trials finals fixed for this weekend have been cancelled as a mark of respect
