Historic achievement for Aoife Quinn - National Handball champion 2013

Historic - Aoife Quinn on right receives G.A.A Handball National  Girls 15 & Under  B 40 x 20  title.

National handball title for Aoife Quinn

It is a long way from Clare to Castleocnnor but the return journey was not too long for Sligo star Aoife Quinn who captured the Girls 15 & Under B 40 x 20 title in Clare last Sunday.  It is Quinn’s biggest achievement to date and much more success awaits Aoife Quinn in the years ahead.

In the quarter final Aoife defeated Laois’s Leah Dunphy by 15-4 15-2.  Her semi-final opponent was Dubliner Meadbh ni Dhalaigh. It proved a tougher test for the Castleconnor star but yet again Aoife was composed and played with great confidence on her way to the final with a sparkling display taking her into the final with a 15-8, 15-10 win. Her final opponent was Avril Deegan. Quinn was unstoppable right from the off. Deegan could not handle Quinn’s accurate serving as the Sligo star racked up scores taking game one by 15-6.  The second game Quinn was pushed all the way but she stayed strong and in one of her best performances to date she came through in a thrilling finish to capture the national handball title by 15-12.  Quinn created a little piece of handball history as she became the first Sligo girl to win a  National Juvenile girls handball title in over twenty years.

Her Dad Oisin trainer & mentor shared in his daughter’s sensational achievement immediately after the final. Praise must go to the Castleconnor handball club and coaches who have been instrumental in nurturing the young handball talent in Sligo for many years. The results of a successful club Juvenile structure  is now paying off.
