Browne chasing 2 County Championships titles

Browne chasing 2 County Championships titles

Castleconnor’s Michael Browne will represent Sligo in the Junior B singles Connacht 40 x 20 championships following his 21-16, 21-6 defeat of Drumcliffe’s Colin Slevin last evening. Browne & doubles partner Tom Tuffy are also in the final of the Junior C doubles having defeated last year’s representatives in Collooney’s Michael Bruen & Gerry Coleman by 21-16, 21-7. It will be an all Castleconnor final with Browne & Tuffy facing Michael Jones & Joe Gorman on Wednesday next in Castleconnor at 8 p.m.

Connacht Championships 40 x 20 2012

Sligo start their 2012 handball campaign

Sligo players will be in Connacht Championships action on Friday week with the start of the 2012 championships set to take place. The Castleconnor club will host 2 games that of the Masters B where Castleconnor’s Mark Murphy faces the daunting prospect of taking on runner-up in last year’s Masters B final Jason Judge. Judge is from the nearby Bofield club. Murphy will give a good account of himself in this grade but the odds are stacked against the Sligo man.
In the 2nd match Collooney’s Michael Bruen takes on newcomer in Charlestown’s Dave Corrigan. Bruen will be buoyed up following his 21-18, 21-17 victory over Michael Jones in the County final. The Collooney man will have benefitted from this win and will need to raise his game to get over the challenge posed by Corrigan.

St. Mary’s host 2 more games the same evening with Michael Browne taking on Mayo’s Darragh Ruane in the Junior B singles. Browne is a very under rated player in Sligo and has the potential of doing well in this championship. In the Over-35 singles Collooney’s Shane Bruen gets to grip with Mayo’s George Miller. Bruen defeated Milller in this year’s 60 X 30 Championships. Miller is more accustomed to the 40 x 20 court and is sure to give Bruen a tough challenge. A great contest is in prospect with Bruen just about shading it in a close match.

Michael Porter - The passing of a handball legend

The Late Michael Porter R.I.P.

Michael Porter the passing of a handball legend

There was widespread sadness in Sligo handball circles and at National level when news came filtering through last Friday of the death of Michael Porter from the Ballymote Club. Michael Porter came to prominence early in his handball career when he won the All-Ireland minor hardball doubles with Francis McCann and All-Ireland Colleges titles in 1976 as a member of the Colaiste Mhuire Ballymote team. Michael Porter & Francis McCann’s playing partnership was an enduring one that lasted 30 years. In 1977 the Minor Doubles All-Ireland doubles was brought back to Sligo. The same year Michael Porter won the All-Ireland Vocational Schools singles title and the doubles with Padraig McCann representing Corran College Ballymote. Two years later the U-21 doubles title was won with Francis McCann and in 1981 the Junior softball doubles. He took a lengthy break away from the game but returned in spectacular fashion in 2001 winning the Masters A softball singles. In the following 2 years Michael Porter & Francis McCann excelled winning the Masters A doubles in 2002 & the Masters A softball doubles in 2003 & National One-Wall titles.

In an astonishing career Michael Porter won twenty one Connacht titles (1976-2006) and eleven All-Ireland handball titles (1976-2003). Michael Porter & Francis McCann won 19 Connacht titles & 5 All-Ireland titles together. Michael played his part in the success of the Irish 1-Wall Nationals which Sligo hosted from 1999-2008 and officiated at many of the finals.

Handball’s loss is nothing compared to the loss to his wife Margaret, Son, Jonathan and daughters Catherine and Sarah, his parents Jimmy & Margaret and sister Marian. The Sligo handball board extends sympathy to the family on their sad loss. Sligo Handball players & officials provided a guard of honour at the funeral and indeed it was only fitting that Francis McCann would lead the Sligo handball guard of honour of his dear friend & playing partner. The Co. Board cancelled all its weekend matches as a mark of respect to the deceased. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Brady playing with a heavily broken finger started slowly . Shanks was in sensational form in the early stages going 11-3 up at one stage. Cavan took game one by 21-10 but Meath in true Royal County style came back strongly from 10-14 behind to forge clear by 18-14. The reigning champions showing their undoubted class roared back into contention when leading by 20-18. Meath with Sheridan giving it everything forced Cavan to serve game ball 5 times before a lightening low kill from Brady sealed the win for the Cavan men. Catriona Casey had a facile win in the Ladies Minor singles over Armagh’s Fionnuala McKenna. Cork’s Killian Carroll made it a doubles success in the Minor grade when capturing the doubles title with Patrick Herlihy winning by 21-4, 21-20 over Monaghan’s Terry McElvaney & Christopher McKenna. Michael Porter R.I.P. - the passing of a handball legend

Michael Porter the passing of a handball legend
There was widespread sadness in Sligo handball circles and at National level when news came filtering through last through last Friday of the death of Michael Porter from the Ballymote Club. Michael Porter came to prominence early in his handball career when winning the Minor Doubles All-Ireland doubles with club mate Francis McCann back in 1977. The duo won Minor & Hardball doubles titles together as well as Junior Softball doubles in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

He took a lengthy break in the mid 1980’s but returned to win the Masters B Irish Nationals title in 2001 and followed this up the following year winning the Masters A singles. Michael played his part in the success of the Irish 1-Wall Nationals which Sligo hosted from 1999-2008 and officiated at many of the finals.
Handball’s loss is nothing compared to the loss of his wife Margaret, Son, Jonathan and daughters Catherine and Sarah, both his parents Jimmy & Margaret and sister Marian. Sligo Handball Board extended sympathies to the Porter family on their sad loss. Sligo handball members provided a guard of honour at the funeral on Sunday.
The Co. Board cancelled all its weekend matches as a mark of respect to the deceased.
