Browne chasing 2 County Championships titles


Castleconnor’s Michael Browne will represent Sligo in the Junior B singles Connacht 40 x 20 championships following his 21-16, 21-6 defeat of Drumcliffe’s Colin Slevin last evening. Browne & doubles partner Tom Tuffy are also in the final of the Junior C doubles having defeated last year’s representatives in Collooney’s Michael Bruen & Gerry Coleman by 21-16, 21-7. It will be an all Castleconnor final with Browne & Tuffy facing Michael Jones & Joe Gorman on Wednesday next in Castleconnor at 8 p.m.

Sligo start their 2012 handball campaign

Sligo players will be in Connacht Championships action on Friday week with the start of the 2012 championships set to take place. The Castleconnor club will host 2 games that of the Masters B where Castleconnor’s Mark Murphy faces the daunting prospect of taking on runner-up in last year’s Masters B final Jason Judge. Judge is from the nearby Bofield club. Murphy will give a good account of himself in this grade but the odds are stacked against the Sligo man.
In the 2nd match Collooney’s Michael Bruen takes on newcomer in Charlestown’s Dave Corrigan. Bruen will be buoyed up following his 21-18, 21-17 victory over Michael Jones in the County final. The Collooney man will have benefitted from this win and will need to raise his game to get over the challenge posed by Corrigan.

St. Mary’s host 2 more games the same evening with Michael Browne taking on Mayo’s Darragh Ruane in the Junior B singles. Browne is a very under rated player in Sligo and has the potential of doing well in this championship. In the Over-35 singles Collooney’s Shane Bruen gets to grip with Mayo’s George Miller. Bruen defeated Milller in this year’s 60 X 30 Championships. Miller is more accustomed to the 40 x 20 court and is sure to give Bruen a tough challenge. A great contest is in prospect with Bruen just about shading it in a close match.
