Castleconnor bow out of Connacht club 40 x 20 Championships
The
Castleconnor club who reached the All-Ireland handball club 60 x 30 semi-finals
in June bowed out of this year’s 40 x 20 championships at the Connacht
semi-final stage, writes Michael McGee.
On Friday
evening the team went down to Mayo Champions Swinford by 121-89 played in
Bofield.
In the
opening game Castleconnor’s Martin Cooney had a terrific battle with Swinford’s
Peter Cassidy. In a very even contest it finished 15-21, 21-16. In the doubles
match Castleconnor’s Tom Foody & Michael Browne took on George Miller &
Peter Gavigan.The Castleconnor duo lost the opening game by 12-21. In the second game Tom Foody picked up a knee
injury and this hampered the Sligo team’s chances. Browne & Foody found
themselves quickly 18-4 behind but staged a remarkable recovery. Their fight back
just failed in the end by 19-21. In the final singles match Castleconnor’s Mark
Murphy was edged out by 10-21, 12-21 by Swinford’s Seamus Casserly. Overall Swinford defeated Castleconnor by
121-89.
