Castleconnor to derail St. Mary’s in Corballa

Castleconnor to derail St. Mary’s in Corballa

The Sligo handball team league 40 x 20 final is set for an exciting finish with Castleconnor A & St. Mary’s set to do battle for the second time in 3 weeks, writes Michael McGee.
Two weeks ago the Castleconnor A side had to defeat runaway title contenders St. Mary’s to stay in contention. The Saint’s had full points from their five outings in the league before the meeting with Castleconnor. The Castleconnor A team of Michael Browne, Tom Tuffy, Mark Murphy & Tom Foody played great handball on the night to record an 82-66 win and stun the 2010 champions. In a very even contest it was only in the last game that Castleconnor’s Mark Murphy & Tom Foody pulled clear to reach the final.
The 2012 league has been the closest in recent year’s with 3 teams all with 5 wins each. Castleconnor A, St. Mary’s & Drumcliff. The Oxfield club can count themselves unlucky despite playing well throughout the league it all came down to the highest overall scores and Castleconnor A & St. Mary’s did just enough to reach the final. The St. Mary’s juggernaut came off the rails in their last outing with the defending champions. Next Sunday will see if the Saint’s can get back on track. Castleconnor A have built up a head of steam just at the right time and with home advantage in their favour it should be enough to see them retain their league title.
