Sligo Handball players aiming for Connacht titles

Francis McCann

Sligo handball stars aiming for Connacht titles

Sligo handball players go in search of 5 Connacht handball titles this weekend. St. Marys duo of Peter Chambers & Michael McMorrow travel to Castlebar the venue of their semi-final triumphs and both have an excellent chance of bringing Provincial titles back to Sligo. Chambers was enjoying the Galway racing festival in Ballybrit last weekend and will be hoping his current good form will see him cross the finishing line in flying colours.

Meanwhile the following day in the Williamstown court in Galway Collooney’s Shane Bruen and Ballymote’s Francis McCann & Martin Golden will be hoping for a Sligo treble in their respective grades.

Saturday 6th August 2011 in Castlebar at 5pm

Golden Masters B Singles: Peter Chambers Sligo v Willie Corcoran Galway

Peter Chambers is a Newport native and he put that to one side in his semi-final over Mayo’s James McNulty. Chambers was runner-up in 2 Connacht finals before finally getting his hands on a Connacht title when teaming up with Collooney’s Stanley Harte to win the Silver Masters B doubles title last year. Chambers is playing well in training but will need to move an extra gear if he is secure his second Connacht title against Galway’s Willie Corcoran

Emerald Masters B Singles: Michael McMorrow Sligo v James Coughlin Roscommon.
Michael McMorrow is the holder of 2 Connacht titles. The St. Mary’s Club man had an exciting 3 game battle with Mayo’s Eugene Maloney in the semi-final before battling back for a memorable victory. The Castlebar court should suit the Sligo man and he bids for a 3rd Connacht handball title.

Sunday 7th August 2011 in Williamstown at 3pm

O35 B Singles: Shane Bruen Sligo v Billy Kelly Roscommon

Collooney star Shane Bruen makes a welcome return to competitive action after a 2 years sabbatical away from the game. Bruen and playing partner Kevin Meehan won Connacht doubles titles in 2008/09 in both 40 x 20 & 60 x 30 courts and a Connacht singles title in 2008. Bruen had an excellent 21-6, 21-8 win over Mayo’s George Miller in the semi-final
Billy Kelly from the Ballymoe Club in Roscommon already has an All-Ireland medal having been a medal of the Ballymore side that won the All-Ireland 40 x 20 Junior B Interclub title last year. If Bruen can maintain his semi-final form there is every chance the Collooney player will have another Connacht title to celebrate

Silver Masters A Singles Martin Golden Sligo v Anthony O’Donnell Roscommon.
A holder of 18 All-Ireland handball titles the experienced Sligo player will need it all as he faces Roscommon’s Anthony O’Donnell. The Ballymote man has not been tested in the championship so far but will face a stern examination from O’Donnell. Golden will need to stamp his authority on the game right from the start if he is to capture another Connacht championship medal

Golden Masters A Singles: Francis McCann Sligo v Dermot Doolin Roscommon

Sligo’s Francis McCann is one of Sligo’s most decorated players having won numerous Connacht & All-Ireland titles. He won his first adult title at Provincial level having won the Junior Singles back in 1980. Sligo Handball doubles pairs reach Connacht finals

Mayo's John Kenny/Tom Derrig with Paddy Walsh & Mick Kelly.

Pat Moylett & Charlie McDonagh Mayo with Michael Browne & Tom Tuffy Sligo Junior C doubles Connacht semi-final. The Mayo men won in straight games.

Sligo doubles pairs reach Connacht handball finals

The Emerald Masters B doubles pairing of Michael McMorrow & John McLoughlin qualified for the Provincial final following a facile 21-6, 21-3 victory over Mayo’s Jimmy Sheridan & Pat Hayes played in Castlebar on Friday evening last. McMorrow’s fine form continued when playing impressively as the duo cancelled out any thoughts of a Mayo win with a commanding display. Peter Chambers & Stanley Harte also qualified for the final with a 21-14, 21-8 victory over James McNulty & Tom Kenny. Chambers & Harte will be confident they can win their 2nd Connacht doubles title in as many years.

Unfortunately for the Ruby Masters team of Paddy Walsh & Mick Kelly reign as All-Ireland champions is over as a more determined John Kenny & Tom Derrig dealt with the Sligo men’s ambitions while playing impressively themselves. Kenny played superbly on the left side of court with the over worked Walsh matching Mayo’s double threat for long passages of play. Walsh ran himself to a standstill but the greater team display from Kenny & Derrig was enough to see the Mayo men advance to the All-Ireland semi-final where they will meet the Munster champions. The Junior C doubles of Tom Tuffy & Michael Browne suffered the same fate as they were well beaten by a more potent pairing from Mayo in Charlie McDonagh & Pat Moylett

McMorrow's magical fightback

Michael McMorrow through to the Connacht final following an exciting win over Mayo's Eugene Maloney in Collooney today

McMorrow’s magic fightback

There was mixed results from Sligo handballers in the semi-finals of the Connacht 60 x 30 championships at the weekend. Legendary player Paddy Walsh got Sligo of to the perfect start when defeating Mayo’s John Kenny by 21-17, 21-12. Walsh had to be near his best to reach the final. Kenny pushed Walsh all the way in game one with the St. Mary’s club man just about edging it. Into the second Walsh found himself 8-0 down before storming back to win comfortably in the end.
In the Emerald Masters B singles it proved the match of the weekend with Michael McMorrow getting the better of Mayo’s Eugene Maloney in a 3 game thriller in Collooney. McMorrow was well on top in game one taking it by 21-16 but Maloney hit back immediately in game 2. Maloney played superbly and McMorrow struggled to keep in contention. The Mayo man taking game 2 by 21-10. In an exciting 3rd game McMorrow regained his composure and put in some sterling work with excellent deft serving to Maloney’s left corner and finished well when in good positions. Maloney to his credit battled to the very end in an contest that could have went either way. McMorrow’s great battling qualities stood to him in the closing stages. Maloney exerted serious pressure and McMorrow somehow was able and pull the game out of the fire winning it by 21-19 in an absorbing final game. McMorrow’s goes through to the provincial final but Maloney can be very proud of his efforts in a thoroughly enjoyable contest.
